Shockwave therapy for knee pain

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses Radial Pressure Wave (RPW) technology to transmit acoustic shock waves into the targeted pain area through a specialised transmitter and handpiece, reducing pain and stimulating healing.

The shockwaves stimulate healing at a cellular level to repair damaged tissue. The treatment increases blood flow and promotes the growth of collagen and new blood vessels, also known as neovascularisation. It also reverses chronic inflammation and breaks up calcium build-up, creating the optimal environment for healing and restoring normal function.

The shockwaves also influence the body’s pain-regulating mechanisms, providing immediate local pain relief.

Conditions Shockwave Therapy Can Treat

  • Myofascial Trigger Points: Localised tender or painful areas.

  • Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the ligament across the bottom of the foot.

  • Chronic Tendinopathies: Painful, swollen tendons such as:

    Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

    Achilles Tendinopathy

Shoulder Tendinopathy & Rotator Cuff Issues

  • Gluteal Tendinopathy: Pain in the hips and buttocks.

  • Insertional Tendinopathy: Where the tendon meets the heel bone.

  • Patella Tendinopathy: Injuries to the tendon that connects the kneecap.

  • Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy: Irritation or damage where the tendons attach to the pelvis, causing pain and stiffness in the upper thigh or buttock area.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy activates your body’s natural healing response, promoting the repair of injured tissue instead of just easing painful symptoms. Key benefits include:

  • Reduces Pain: Effective in relieving pain after just a few sessions.

  • Improves Range of Motion: Increases mobility in the affected area.

  • Reduces Muscle Tightness: Relieves muscle tension and stiffness.

  • Stimulates Blood Flow: Improves circulation, boosting tissue repair.

  • Non-Invasive: No medication, no needles, or surgery.

What to expect with Shockwave Therapy?

1. Assessment – One of our physiotherapists will do a thorough assessment to determine your suitability for Shockwave Therapy.

2. Preparation – The area to be treated is exposed, and a conductive gel is applied to ensure efficient transmission of the shockwaves.

3. Application – A specialised portable handheld device administers shockwaves to the affected area. The strength and rate of the shockwaves depend on your tolerance and the specific condition being treated.

4. Duration – A typical session lasts 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the condition and the treatment area. Most patients need 5 to 10 sessions to fully rehabilitate the injury.

Although some discomfort may be experienced during the treatment, many patients notice a reduction in pain within the first 24 hours.

What to expect after Shockwave Therapy?

After treatment, your body continues its natural healing processes, stimulated by the shockwaves. We generally advise that you refrain from strenuous activities involving the treated area for about 48 hours.

Our physiotherapists will also provide a personalised program of exercises to complement the treatment. The exercises will help build strength and flexibility, which reduces the risk of further injury.

What are Shockwaves?

Acoustic waves or sound waves with very high energy bursts you see with lightning strikes are known as shockwaves. When using shockwave therapy for treating chronic pain, the penetrating sound waves directly target the body’s tissue layers, creating the optimal environment for healing.

What is the difference between shockwave therapy and ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses multiple-pulse sound waves to heat body tissue, while shock waves use high-energy single-pulse sound waves to stimulate natural healing.

Is shockwave therapy suitable for everyone?

Shockwave Therapy may not be suitable for:

- Pregnant individuals

- People with disturbed sensory or nervous function (e.g., diabetes)

- Those who have received corticosteroid injections in the last 6 weeks

- Individuals with malignancies

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

You may feel some minor discomfort during treatment. Any soreness afterwards typically passes quickly and doesn’t limit daily activities. Most patients experience immediate pain relief from their condition following treatment.

When combined with physiotherapy, shockwave therapy provides a comprehensive approach to recovering from an injury and preventing recurrence.

It treats the injury directly, while physiotherapy strengthens the supporting joints and tissues, addressing contributing issues that may worsen the pain.
