What is sports physiotherapy & how can it help you?

Sports physio is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on preventing, diagnosing and treating sports injuries while also helping you gain optimal performance and recovery.

During training, you probably place your body under a large amount of duress on a consistent basis. Injuries and overuse weaknesses caused during training can eventually lead to more serious damage that affects your performance and also your ability to recover optimally.

Working with a sports physiotherapist during peak training seasons can help you prevent injuries from occurring while also ensuring you recover faster between training sessions. In the event you are injured, a sports physio can help you with your recovery and also with building up strength so you can be back on the field in no time.

What to expect in a sports physio session

At Graceville Physio, Dr Christina Hart Physiotherapist specialises Sports Physio.  Christina is qualified conditioning coach and has extensive experience in the treatment of rehabilitation of all sports interests.  Christina has a special interest in Ballet and Martial Arts type injuries and can help enhance the performance of these clients.  Christina can also complete pre-pointe assessments for ballet dancers.  Christina will perform a thorough examination to assess existing injuries, signs of overuse or weakness and the general biomechanic patterns of your body..

Understanding the cause of injury, in combination with your movement habits, can help us craft a treatment plan that will offer you a long-term solution. We also use this method to prevent recurring injuries and also as a preventative strategy to mitigate any future risk of injury.

We use a wide variety of techniques to achieve this so your sessions with us may include any or all of the following:

  • An assessment of your movement patterns and movement faults
  • Analysis of weaknesses in your body tension caused by overuse
  • Screening tests
  • Massage or dry needling to relieve strain on muscles, tendons and connective tissue*
  • Correction and strengthening exercises
  • Exercise therapy
  • Joint mobilisation and taping techniques
  • Stretching techniques
  • Heat/cold/electrotherapy
  • Tips for ultimate performance & perfecting your technique
  • Advice on shoes, equipment, gradual return to sport etc

Ultimately, sports physio is about bringing your body into balance so it can function at its best on and off the field. Bodies that are in balance function better than those that are not.

Our team’s goal is to optimise your maximum potential. However, sometimes, we may need to refer you to a GP or another specialist if there are deeper concerns regarding your injury.

*Combining your sports physiotherapy session with an additional therapy like remedial massage or dry needling has been shown to have great benefits in speeding up recovery, especially after injury.

Sport Specific Screening Tests

Screening is a process where a physiotherapist will look for sport-specific movement patterns that may indicate potential weakness or areas that might be prone to injury. Among other traits, the screening process will generally assess:

  • Muscle weakness, imbalance, co-ordination & strength
  • Flexibility
  • Posture assessment
  • Injury patterns and profiles (including past & current injuries and intervention)
  • Joint or muscular lack of range
  • Proprioception levels (your innate sense of where your body is in space and an important skill in reducing injury)
  • Cardiovascular endurance levels
  • Biomechanical analysis of your movement habits

Sport-specific screenings are available for elite athletes as well as anyone else participating in sports (even recreational sports).

We’ve worked with people from all sporting backgrounds, including:
  • Running
  • Football
  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Golf
  • Swimming
  • Horse Riding
  • Cricket
  • Gym & Weightlifting

What is Sports Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists who have special interest in sport strive to get the best from their clients. Sports physiotherapy involves assessment of the client’s particular movement faults, correction and strengthening exercises help them to correct these faults. These correction and strengthening exercises help the sports person to perform to their ultimate ability.
Sports physiotherapy can also involve massage either by a physiotherapist or a qualified remedial massage. This specialised massage involves muscle, tendon and connective tissue massage. Sometimes this massage is quite deep and can also involve strengthening of these muscles.

Specialised massage is also available to assist with scar treatment, after surgery from sports injuries.

Physiotherapists can gain “Western Acupuncture or Dry Needling” qualifications by attending “Australian Physiotherapy Association Approved Courses”. We have found in our clinic, dry needling or western acupuncture to be an invaluable tool.
