Our New Year resolution is all about you and what we can do to make 2019 a healthy and pain-free year for you. Our goal is to not only maintain but also to improve the high standard of care you’ve experienced with us.  We are committed to your health and well-being.

In many cases there is more than one factor contributing to your pain, especially if it is recurrent or has been there for a long time. Often getting rid of your pain is the easy part. Stopping it from coming back is the real challenge!  Your treatment program will include specific techniques and exercises that correct the underlying cause of your problems, not just give you temporary relief.

Our Physio Pilates evening classes are a great maintenance option if you have recovered from an injury or want to prevent injuries and improve flexibility.   These classes focus on improving your posture, strengthening your core and also have an emphasis on neck and back strength. 

Here’s a few tips to get you started in the new year:

  1. A physio assessment is a great way to keep yourself healthy and pain-free in 2019. Find out where you are at and what you can be doing to keep yourself in tip top condition.
  2. If you are recovering from an injury or a niggle following a tailored exercise program will enable you to keep working on your recovery between your physio sessions. These may include stretches, strengthening and core stability, and are especially important in minimising the risk of your problems returning in the future.
  3. We can discuss any important lifestyle factors such as desk postures and exercise activities that may need to be adjusted to help you recover.
  4. When lifting objects, use the correct technique (as instructed by your physiotherapist) so that you can protect your back.
  5. When exercising, monitor your technique, breathing pattern, and range of motion during each repetition.
  6. Maintain an upright posture and practice postural awareness exercises at regular intervals throughout the day.
  7. Make it a habit to stretch at regular intervals while at work.

Here are a few things about injury healing you may not have been aware of.

1. Scar Tissue is more likely to form without treatment.

Scar tissue can cause ongoing pain and stiffness in skin, muscles and ligaments.
Physiotherapy can prevent excessive scarring from forming through advice regarding movement, massage and other hands-on treatment.

2. Your ability to sense the position of your body, known as proprioception, is often damaged after an injury and can be retrained.

Impaired proprioception is a major factor in re-injury. If you’ve ever heard someone say “my knee/ankle/shoulder still doesn’t feel 100%” then this could be why. The good news is that with a specific exercise program, proprioception can be improved and recovered.

3. Once healing has finished, your body may not be exactly the same as before.

Following an injury, ligaments may be lax, joints may be stiffer and muscles are almost always weaker. While the pain may be gone, there might still be factors that need to be addressed to prevent more complicated issues in the future.

4. You may have picked up some bad habits while waiting for the injury to heal.

While in pain, we often change the way we do things, this can lead to the development of poor movement patterns and muscle imbalances. Even though the pain has gone, these new patterns can remain and create further problems down the road.

5. Injuries don’t always heal completely.

On rare occasions, injuries may not be able to heal completely on their own. The most serious example of this is a fracture that cannot heal if the bone is not kept still enough. Other factors that may prevent an injury from healing include poor circulation, diabetes, insufficient care of the injury
and poor nutrition.

Your physiotherapist can assess your injury and develop a treatment plan that will both restore you to the best
possible function and prevent further injuries. If concerned always see a medical professional for advice on your
individual injury.
